Hardanger is a traditional ‘white on white’ embroidery technique that enhances the sculptural qualities of the stitches. In this series of work the white surface and the top layers of white ‘stitches sandwich the landscape of Sillaheen. This local hilldale has been my refuge when my actions were limited, but the views from here are not. veiled with a layer of cross stitched marks I sought to bring these flattened and faraway vistas into touch. Kloster blocks, satin stitches and herringbone patterns shape the landscape, almost forcing the viewer to focus on the layers within the painting, in a search for what is real and what is fake.
